This is absolutely one of those simple advice that everyone should hear posts. I'm all too guilty of spending my gaming time trying to pick something rather than enjoying the free time I have and then feeling incredibly guilty for not getting to decompress. backlogs piling up and that problem just gets worse every time.
I’m currently playing through every final fantasy in order and working on 2! Honestly NES games and stuff like that are so easy to pick up and play for a bit
Another factor I run in to constantly is what game fits the mood that I'm in. I often have a rotation of games that I'll play within a given week: a backlog item, a new release I've been excited for, a couple of online multiplayer titles, etc. So often I'll look at the time, and my recently played on my PS5 home screen and groan because the thought of booting up any of them just seems like yet another chore. I get this the most with souls-likes, large rpgs, and rougelites/likes and other games with intentionally repetitive design. These feel like the worst games to play after a long day, so sometimes that hour is wasted looking longingly at my library unless the choice paralysis sets in
Thank you for this. I made mostly the same discoveries, especially over the last 6 months. I used to be in a frenzy to try and play something every weeknight.
But I found that sometimes I’d waste the evening trying to decide, only to realize I didn’t feel like playing anything. Not in the mood to continue the game(s) I’m in the middle of because I’m kinda bored with it and want to try something fresh.
But I also don’t feel like playing a new or backlog game because, ironically, I don’t feel like learning a new system in the limited time I have. Your article reminded me of the time I tried to play Batman: Arkham Origins.
Once I got past the opening moments of the game and all these quest spots littered the map, I instantly felt overwhelmed and just noped out. That was probably 8 years ago, and I never went back.
I do agree that sometimes it’s better not to bother with it and do something else I enjoy instead of wasting an hour deciding what to play.

We’ve all been there for, any games you’re currently playing now?

Nice, I purchased those on sale with the goal to go through them all one day as well, glad to hear you’re enjoying them.

I have been there as well, and you’re right having 3-4 games in different genres is ideal based on your mood
